I just changed my oil for the first time and I see in the manual where it says to clean the oil screen and the screen nut?

How often do people really do that? Do you all take the right side of the motor off and clean that at every oil change?

there should be one under the clutch cover and one at the bottom of the front down tube where the oil line goes if i remember correctly.i clean the clutch cover screen about every 3 or 4 years because i have never seen anything in it.and the down tube screen about the same.i think you should check both now because its a new motor and it may have debris in it from assembly.then check it again when the manual says and if its clean you be the judge how often you need it.my bike is so old everything that is going to fall off inside the motor fell off years ago!

That sounds good Kubiak, I think I checked mine when I had about 1000 miles on it I saw nothing but I did manage to tear the gasket when I took off the cover. Jultty650l I'd get a gasket, if you don't tear it you can reuse it if you want, more than likely it won't leak because the gasket is still fresh. There is a screen at the bottom of the down tube on the frame , check that also, I would'nt check it every time though. I also cut my filter open every change to look at the metal in it. There should be a fair amount at the first change, but diminish as the engine breaks in. I haven't opened the right case since then I've got 6750 in it now.

01 XR650L - 9K miles, custom oil cooler, homemade oil temp dip stick, Dave's carb mods: slide drilled 5/32", needle shimmed .029", 55 short pilot, 158 main, 2 turns out (Thx Dave), K&N filter, removed: snorkle, exhaust baffle, smog stuff. Sea level riding. Valvoline 10W-40 mc oil.
